Considering using SMF for sports content forum- just a couple questions

Quiet = not lots of people posting a lot.

What happens is that GoDaddy runs hundreds of sites on a single server. To ensure that one site doesn't consume too much resource and prevent others from working, there are all sorts of internal limits set up. The problem is that once you get even remotely busy, it's going to end up tripping over one or other of those limits.

OK- so even a site with limited users, a community of no more than 500 and likely less than 30 at a time using it would be likely to get hung up in the GoDaddy system?

Arantor:
30 users online at a time? You *might* be OK.

GoDaddy's position when I called about the limits that might interfere with a Message Board was "why would we offer installation information for message Board software, which you'll find on our site, if our experience was that Message Boards didn't run well on our servers?" They said the only thing they recommend to people who are setting up is to get an SSL Cert.

So the bottom line is that you're saying in practice the service isn't reliable. I guess I'll start out and see if I can live with it or migrate to something else if it doesn't. Good news is my Hosting Package expires in a couple months!

I guess now I get into setup- I'll check the topics here and begin the process- thanks for your help.

I had already paid up with GoDaddy until 2015 before I started my forum in February, so I'm kinda stuck with them  When I experienced slowness with just four members and phoned them for help, they suggested I switch to a VPS (!!!) and told me that SMF was not a good choice of forum software, in spite of it being the only one on their "Value Applications" one-click install selection  ::)

After that I adopted a policy of phoning them to complain every time I had a go-slow, but for a few months now I've had no problems - touch wood - however, I still only have 6 members and an average of just over 40 posts per day.  It will be interesting to see how the hosting copes when we become busier, especially as I have other sites hosted on the same account....  :-\
