[4367] GM allowed manage board, can see disallowed board in manageboard.

SMF 2.0 RC3

In group permission I allowed Global Moderator to manage boards.

In my forum there is one board with Allowed Groups all unticked, which means every group including Global Moderator is not allowed to see this board.

When a GM goes to manageboard, he can see that disallowed board listed. Which means he can click modify and tick Global Moderator in Allowed Groups. After which he can enter the disallowed board.

In short:

If a board's Allowed Groups has disallowed a Membergroup, even when that group is allowed to manage board in Membergroup permission, it should not see this board in manageboard list.

Arantor:
I see why you think it's a bug, but it isn't.

The ability to manage boards means just that - the ability to manage all boards, which includes access and visibility. If you don't want GMs to be able to change that, don't give them access to it.

If you want it changed, that's a mod request, not a bug.

N. N.:
Indeed, as Arantor says, this is intended. All administrative-type permissions (meaning those in the same group with Manage boards, like Manage members and so on) are global. The idea is that after all if the admin really wants someone to manage boards, then they trust him/her and let him/her do this job fully. (as a simple thought: otherwise not knowing what exists they could also make duplicate boards or who knows what). The permission system is quite complex as it is.
The simple idea is... one should not let an untrusted person manage their boards.

I do understand however, myself, why you may feel it's unexpected. However, for many months, I think I've seen only two cases when people had a very particular need which implied it should be different for their forum... Which may mean that people generally think the permissions system makes sense as it is, in which case we are not going to change the intended design, or not for 2.0 anyway.

Hi Arantor and Norv,

Thanks for sharing the thoughts.

It just came as a surprise today after allowing GM to manage board for some time, while I have a personal board - nothing important in it just some codes such as moving Recent Posts to the top of page, backup of News and Announcements, to do list for the forum, etc.

It'd be nice if there is a warning or reminder by each board's Allowed Groups in future version of SMF. Something like "Unselected groups will still see this board in manageboard if group permission is given to manage boards."

Thanks again.
