why choose smf and not phpbb or mybb?

Yea good question. I tried PHPBB and Discuz! previously and then finally landed on SMF.

PHPBB was quite easy to install but the board didn't come readily with all the cute and fun features I was looking for.

Discuz! was really cute and almost like a toy or game to play with. Unfortunately it only has a small English speaking audience. Also for some reason I felt their security wasn't that good either. Didn't want to spend the time setting up a forum only to be spamed like h311.

Then my friend installed SMF 1.1.13 for me which was alright to start with, and quickly got more interesting with all the mods available and supportive forums. So here I'm using SMF 2.0.1 now. Mainly for its appeal, easiness of installing and configuring, and friendly support network.

In addition I also thought about vBulletin, seeing Ubuntu forum uses it, can't be far from wrong. But cost was an issue. Also I felt vBulletin may be had far tooooo many features more than I needed.

Never tried MyBB. Sounds like my baby and baby is the last thing I want.

I am leaning towards using SMF, mainly because of the look and feel it has from a forum member standpoint, and not so much the coding aspect.  However, after reading this thread, it looks like it might be the best choice all around.
