SMF Development > Applied or Declined Requests
Show a board title but must join to see the content
Kindred:
yes, access (read/write) to boards is set as individual permissions and can be set by individual board (or by permissions profile, applied to multiple boards)
THAT is fairly common on most sites - you have your public areas and you have your registered user areas and then you have some areas restricted to specific groups (like staff) and I have no problem with that...
the reg required to read is BS though.

Hello timeonthewater and welcome to sm.org.
This has been requested several times, but always declined basically due to the reasons above.

No, no, no, no, no, no.
Access to boards is not handled in permissions. It's inclusive-only and set in the board's configuration. There is absolutely no way to deny someone from seeing a board in the base code, only to make sure that they don't have a group that lets them see it.
And there's no way to separate viewing a board from entering it in SMF, not without a mod.
(I didn't rewrite that entirely for Wedge for nothing.)
Kindred:
well, yes, the permissions to do this are not located in the member permissions area, but in the board settings area, you are correct. (but it's still a permissions thing)
and yes, if you can see a board's existence, you can go into it and read the messages...
However reading the messages and responding (or posting a new message) are all separate permissions and can be granted by group. (so, one grop can see and read the board, another group can see, read and respond, and a third group can see, read, respond and post new)
timeonthewater:
All of my sites are viewable by the public. They are all fishing related sites and I want everyone to access General Information and other topics but if you were to view Fishing Reports you have to be a member. This is what most of the 11,000 members want.
I do not harvest email address and no body hates spammers more than I do.
I simply want to display all the board titles but restrict access to members only for one board but still be able to see it is there. I can't imagine why any developer would care how you restrict traffic. After all that is the same type of censorship they are trying to avoid.
