How do I edit SMF and see changes without uploading it?

I don't have hosting yet and prefer to wait until I get my theme setup the way I want it to look. I have downloaded SMF and my theme. From searches, I've downloaded XAMPP, MySQL, and php. Now I have no idea what to do. I simply want to make changes and then see what those changes look like. Thanks in advance.

ApplianceJunk:
You will have to install xammp first.
This site will tell you how to.

This is perhaps the hardest thing to do, I've given up twice. :(

ApplianceJunk:
Twice? You give up to easy. ;)

Best thing to do is grab WampServer - I find it much more friendly than the others. Run the installer and afterwards you'll have Apache, MySQL and PHP all ready set up for you.

Then all you have to do is unpack the SMF files in C:\wamp\www\smf (or similar) and then http://localhost/smf/ will be the place to go.

As far as database configuration and testing goes, the default WampServer configuration is to use a DB username of 'root' (without the quotes) and an empty password. Since it's only for personal testing, having a secure setup is not a big deal.
