Question regarding SMF install directory
(1/1)
matritte:
Hi. I was wondering what is the best location to install SMF if (a) I intend to use portal/front page and (b) I'd like a mysite.xxx/forums link for the actual forum section. My goals is to have mysite.xxx as the front page and mysite.xxx/forums as the forum section, linked off the front page. I tried several combinations and can't get it to work so I need help with this one. One thing I did notice is that once I install portal the front page lacks a "forum" button...this has been the most frustrating part, and I probably would have had this working by now if it just had that button. But still, I really need your help to tell me the best way to go about this as the software and linux are new to me.
Thank you.
matritte:
ps. The reason I wrote xxx is that this site said I can't post links. That should obviously be ".com" :)
MrPhil:
Heh, heh. You know, .xxx is a legitimate Top Level Domain now! "mysite.com" is obviously a made-up name, so you can do that. Even if you post a real link, I think it will just be disabled so no one can click on it. It's not like the SMF Goon Squad (tm) is going to come out and break your kneecaps!
Putting the forum in its own subdirectory is almost always a good idea, as it lets you add other applications in their subdirectories, without everyone stepping on each other or cluttering up the root directory. Are you using one of the SMF portals (Simple Portal, TinyPortal, etc.) or something else? You'd probably get better support for that specific portal by posting in its own support thread. If this is an SMF portal, I would think that it would automatically include a Forum link (unless it's confused by your putting SMF into a subdirectory). If it's not SMF, you'll probably have to manually add a link to your forum.
matritte:
Thanks man. I am using Simple Portal. When I use Frontpage mode, the default theme doesn't have a link to the forums. It only has a "block" with the forum categories in it, so you can get to them that way, but since you have to click on a category to get to the forums, the block doesn't take you to the forum root. If that makes sense. It's just clunky and I'm trying to make it smoother by just having a forum button on the portal but nothing seems to work. :(
matritte:
I am basically trying to do exactly what this site does. If you look at http://www.simplemachines.org/ you can see the "community" link at the top. Well, on my install, there is no link that like (I assume it would be called "forums" by default?) on the portal's front page, and I don't understand why. If someone could tell me how to make that happen I'd be grateful!
