As the admin you have tyhe ability to remove them.

Tried that, removing them did nothing...  The avatars were still there.

I am not sure as I haven't looked but if you are running MySQL from your admin panel in MySQL check to see if there is a table for just Avatars and empty that table. That will remove all the avatars from your site.

The table you are looking for is smf_members and the column is Avatars. Then you just need to empty that column and that will remove all Avatars. Then from there you just disable Avatars in the Admin CP to prevent members from using avatars.
