How to get around this

I moderate a small forum where there is an absentee admin.
The 1.1.8 is in dire need of updating.
The registration date verification is still 2011 and new members complain once they get in.
The admin has not been around since Aug 2011 and I do not get any reply to emails....even when inundated with spambots during the Christmas season last year.  He seems to be totally out of the picture.

Is there any way to get in and update the forum if one does not have admin priviledges?
I get 'error' 'You are not allowed to administrate this forum.'  when trying to access the update.

Who is the owner of the site?

You can get around this via FTP / database access.

thanks for the help, but I am afraid you are talking way over my head.
I have no idea how to transfer those files.
There must be an easier way to do a direct upgrade?

I volunteered to moderate.  The absentee administrator is the owner but seems to have abandoned the forum completely. I think he just lost interest and abandoned it all.
