Is SMF suitable for me?
planetphillip:
Hi,
I have a project that looks like it will require a forum. I'm trying to source the best one for my needs:
One-click update: I don't want to have to download files, then upload them to my server and then go through a process etc. I just want to be able to click a button and have it update.
I want users to be able to easily attach images, videos and files to any thread, that can be downloaded, or preferably viewed from within the forum.
I want to be able to assign passwords for individual threads, as well as a global password for the forum.
Is the standard release of SMF able to do those things?
TIA
Antechinus:
No.
It will do the updates, and it will attach images and files but not videos (although you can get a vid embed mod easily).
Passwords for each thread would require a custom mod. I've never heard of that feature on any forum app.
planetphillip:
Thank you for the fast reply.
So, the passworded thread is the problem.
Any suggestions as to how I could manage that issue?
If I create sub-forums, can these be password protected? I'm not expecting to have more than 25 threads a year, so would consider creating new sub-forums for each one. It's not an elegant solution but it might be the easiest.
I could also get people to upload their videos to password protected YouTube accounts if needed.
Again, thanks for the fast and helpful reply.
Phillip
Antechinus:
Nope. The only passwords are for user accounts. AFAIK that's standard on all forum apps, although I may be wrong about some of them. Like I said, you'd need a custom mod to handle that functionality.
CapadY:
Little correction.
Only small updates will be a one-click action.
Bigger updates need to upload software to the server. Normaly also all installed MOD's are gone after a bigger update.
