[Help Wanted] document the features of the RSS feed
« on: June 08, 2011, 02:16:47 PM »
Here's a nice post concerning SMF's RSS feed:
http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=25009

This goes all the way back to SMF 1. something, but the online manual barely mentions the RSS feed feature at all.

Can someone start a new document on the RSS feature of SMF 2.0, and perhaps create a link to this information from http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/News_and_newsletters?

I think this feature naturally belongs to the "as a user" portion of the wiki, since anyone, even guest (on forums where guest is allowed to read), can use this feature, if it is enabled by the administrator.

I think we should call it "Feeds" for ATOM, RSS, etc.

Turns out we've got an FAQ article on this already, at http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/XML_feeds

I'm thinking this ought to be linked from some of the other articles.
1) from admin (from the article covring the settings for enabling XML content)
2) somewhere from "as a user", because this covers how to get the information.

Josh imported my post into the wiki a couple weeks after this topic was originally posted.

The only change I would make to it in the wiki is to add a note that permissions, board access, etc. still apply, just in case someone gets paranoid and disables it because they don't want users seeing stuff that's not otherwise available to them :)

BTW in such cases shouldn't a link to original topic or post be included as resource?

That's not such a bad idea. It is an exceedingly long topic, but there are some good tips in there.
