Decreasing Attachment Size, Everybody is Attaching!

(1/3) > >>

NiceCarvings:
Ok, I set the attachemnt sizes to 9000kb and like 2000kb. It seems I may have went a little too high, especially if I was concerned about server performance and overall site optimization? Or, does this really even matter for site performance, or is the effect just in the actual threads where there are large attachments?

Let's say I decide to decrease the allotment now...what happens to the current member attachments that are larger than what i adjust it to?

Lastly, I have a newer forum that looks like it could be a giant someday and EVERYBODY is posting mad amounts of images...large ones too. Given the fact that we have mad image attachers...what exactly would you recommend for sizing limitations on per post, and per image?

Thank you for any help!  :)

What about... this?

NiceCarvings:
Thanks, I have that installed already. It's awesome. I don't think it addresses my concern about file size though.

Yes it re sizes dimensions for viewing, but I don't think it compresses or decreases file size.

Maybe I am missing some setting in Highslide 4.0?

It will only really affect:

1/ Rendering speed in threads that actually contain the images. That's the user's problem, not yours.

2/ Storage space on your server.

3/ Bandwidth usage when rendering said images.

Shouldn't be affected IIRC. I'm pretty sure the new limit would only apply to new attachments.

Problem here is that by the sound of it, you have a lot of enthusiastic no-brainers who just want to upload stuff straight from their cameras. Such people will never learn to resize their own images, and will merely sulk if this is suggested. :D

Best option, if you don't want to carry all the load yourself, is to give them a link to an image hosting service (like Photobucket or whatever) and telll them to link their monster images from there.

For the forum itself, I'd suggest a something like a 500 or 600 kb limit on each attachment. That is enough to deal with any reasonably sized image. Up to you how high you want to go.

I'm not aware of any mods that actually resize/compress the images.

Another option is to restrict posting of attachments to certain membergroups.

LOL HAHA!  Antechinus, thanks so much. I'm laughing at your signature RE: I.E. I love it!

Thank you for the help. You have answered all of my questions and I agree with you on all of it. There are a few posting rather large pics, I should have known better than to have it higher than 500-600k. Even that is a lot for attaching to a forum. We do have some senior citizens though, that we want to get along well.

Yea, I've started a community for sign makers, and everybody wants to show off their work. It's all good. It seems like over 50% of all threads have at least one image attached.

Thanks again guys... Peace!
