AV or no AV?
« on: May 13, 2012, 09:44:46 AM »
Here's the golden question. Do you use an Anti Virus program or not?

On my PC I don't and on my MBP I don't.

I often get told I'm on crack by not having any sort of anti virus, but I wanted to see what you guys think and what ones you use.

P.S: I'm alive! xD

If you don't know much about computers get one. AVG is nice.
But I don't run any I don't want anything slowing down my computer and the problem is most of the antivirus programs are signature based so they only detect issues they know about.

The bigger problem nowadays seems to be malware more than anything else from people with outdated browsers/adobe products.

Seems to me that if you don't use Internet Explorer Exploiter and stay away from stupid Flash™ based games, you should be pretty well protected. Still, the best protection is probably Linux & Chrome. ;)

Pretty good man, and yeah. I make sure to visit only family friendly sites like The Pirate Bay and TokyoTosho :P

Bah, even if I do get a virus, they are easy to remove. That and I usually re-install Windows once every 6 months. Besides, there's nothing on my Windows computer except for Skyrim, Anime and Porn. Banking etc, are all on my MBP.

Doesn't crash as much IMO, it's why I used to install it on customers computers when I worked in a PC Repair shop.

Not used Antivirus in years and not had any problems. Sure, someone who's not very computer knowledgeable should probably use something.

Sometimes you might get into some trouble that you're not aware of. I was thinking like you and haven't used any AV for years. Now I still don't like to use 'em, but sometimes you may not notice what's happening in your computer despite the loads of knowledge you may have. The most important part is not viruses I think; it's the information stealers and rootkits. That's why I use an AV anymore; although I am able to safely remove nearly all viruses manually without an AV. The matter is; I have to notice there is a malware first. :)

@vbgamer45, there are AVs that are not based on signature DBs, but I don't think nowadays it's a significant help.

I don't have any on my iMac, I have Microsoft Security Essentials on my laptop. MSE isn't such a resource hog as Avast or AVG. Doesn't fix the problem that Windows is though :P

I can manually remove them as well, and do it for others all the time, but I prefer to take the slightly safer road and have one installed and running anyway on my Windows installs. I prefer Nod32, it doesn't have a large footprint on resources, and I can say for certain that nothing has gotten in in several years.  It also really depends on what OS and what you do on a particular machine whether it is warranted or not.

On linux, it is a waste to even install one and I don't.

Sure,  Avira Antirus on my local system, mails additionally scanned by ClamAV (integrated server side in amavisd-new mail scanner)

I used to use Avira, until you couldn't block false-alarms permanently.

As I use quite a bit of portable stuff, which some AV's throw a wobbly at, I dumped it.

"Ignore permanently" actually meant "Ignore until the next boot", which was plain stoopid.

I personally use Avast Home Edition as my real time protection. It is fast free and gets the job done. It isn't as good as lets say Kaspersky, but for its price(nothing) it does wonders :D.

Also in this day and age you should also have an antivirus. It does not matter how smart you are with computers you can still get malware via exploits, fraud ads, sites that have been hacked, etc...
