Error log table becomes massive (SMF 1.1.16)

Hi,

I've had an SMF 1.1.16 forum running successfully without changes for months, and I'm now getting a problem with the error log.

The error  log file is filling up rapidly with errors from an unknown cause - often dozens of errors every second - in the time it has taken me to type this message, 630 errors have occurred!

The errors are mostly "Undefined index" or "Undefined offset".

Within SMF, the error log is showing as empty! I have now disabled the error logging feature within SMF, but the error log table STILL fills up, and I have to clear it out using the PHPadmin controls.

Any advice on how to proceed would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Iain.

No changes at all? Did your host do something like change PHP versions?

More likely, you've been hacked and new code is causing all sorts of problems. Go on to your site host file manager and see if any files have been updated suspiciously recently. Compare them to a known good backup or a fresh copy from the large update package. If nothing there, might it involve the last mod you added or removed?

Hi there,

I certainly haven't changed anything for a while - I can check if my host did anything. Last mod was the update to 1.1.16 which was ... start of the year???

None of the PHP files have recently been updated. There are some files in the "Attachments" folder which are newer than any messages posted on the forum ... not sure what these files are.

Would an upgrade to SMF 2 be wise at this point?

Error count from the last hour - about 40,000!

Thanks,

Iain.

Can you give us the exact errors?

Are you using tinyportal? Sometimes the code you add in there could cause it.
