Mass deleting spam accounts
Mirality:
I have both Akismet and Bad Behaviour installed on my forum, and between them (and having a read-only group as the first listed) they seem to manage to block almost all spam posts on my forum. But there are two remaining things that are a bit of a pain in the butt:
1. When one of these (not sure which one) hides/deletes a spam thread, it sometimes leaves the post count alone, so there'll be a member with a post count of 3 (or whatever) but with no actual posts (if you click on the link to view all of them). Is there a way to reset all members to their correct counts? I tried "recount all forum statistics" but that doesn't seem to help.
2. A massive number of spam accounts still get created, even though they can't actually post. (At the moment the member list appears to be increasing by approximately one page of spam accounts per day, but sometimes there's a surge.) After a surge or if I haven't done a purge in a while it can be quite painful to go through and delete them all. My current technique is to go to the member search, enter "0 posts" and "registered before a few days ago" as criteria, then select all on the resulting page and click Delete. But this is still a bit dangerous, because (a bug) I've noticed that after deleting accounts it returns me to the unfiltered memberlist (so if I'm not careful it's too easy to delete real members). This means I have to delete only one page at a time, returning to the search (Back twice) in between each delete.
Surely there's a better way? I can't be the only one getting bitten by these.
Illori:
try installing other anti-spam mods there are others that dont even let the users register which sounds like it would be better for you.

I'm with you Mirality. It's really surprising that there is not a way to mass delete larger than 20 users at a time and even more annoying to learn that after any action the filtered search results are reset.
I finally got the mass registrations to stop by installing the plug in to ask a bunch of questions during registration. It lets you create the questions and answers so if the spam ever starts coming back you can just go in and alter the questions. Questions like what 3 numbers follow the number 6 going backwards.. answer 543..
Get the plug in for registration spam blocking and we will both hope that someone posts a good answer to removal of a large number of member.

In SMF 2.0 I think there are some better options for search users. Maybe a number of items per page setting would be a good idea.

Thanks for reminding me about that... I actually already had it installed (captcha + 2 questions) but I'd forgotten about it and hadn't changed the questions in quite a while. I've changed them now, so hopefully that'll put a dent in the spam registrations for a while.
