News Script
Rothgar:
Got a question eh. The SMF news script is nice, I would like to use it as a portal.... However I would like to know how to do the following.
A) Hide a SubForum better yet a SubForum topic from being listed, but ensure it is viewable by all or they won't be able to see the news ;)
B) Make sure only moderators can post topics, but anyone can post replies/comments.
On another note how is the SMF news script set-up with listing 5 topics? Is it the 5 newest topics.. Not Going by replies Just the main topic post date? I don't want to see my news being all jumped around because of replies etc.
Thanks
~Rothgar

For the limit of 5 newest news topics, look at the news_readme.html file in the SMF main directory. And yes, it's the newest topics. Not replies. :)
A.) Sub-Forum topics aren't shown in the news. :)
B.) You can make a membergroup called News or something and set permissions of your news board to allow your new group to post new topics.

It would help a lot to clarify wording; when I say "forum" I mean a forum like this one, or perhaps yours, or the Mozillazine one, etc.
When I say category, I mean a group of boards - probably what you mean by forum.
When I say board, I mean like the one you've posted in here - "General English Support". I think this is what you mean by subforum, but can't be sure.
When I say child board, I mean one of the children of a board - like the children of "General English Support".
The news script can be configured to take from any boards you want, and you can easily define permissions so that any group - moderators or whatever - can or can't post in that board.

Unknown, don't confuse the poor guy. You're supposed to help people.
Rothgar:
heh Don't worry bout me, I'm a Systems Admin I can keep up with your lingo.
I was using my Terms as:
Forum == Forum
SubForum == Category
Post == Board
Alright for more clarity here it goes:
My Forum has multiple Categories, I would prefer to put my news board under a pre-defined category but make the news board hidden A.K.A. not listed. However I don't want to disable guest viewing.
As for the Posts/Boards I want to allow only Moderators to create Posts/Boards but keep anyone able to post comments/replies.
Is this a little better or still need more clarity?
