1.1 Upgrade - Fears!

(1/1)

dcr:
Hello all,

My forum has been limping along for a couple of years because I haven't had time to maintain or keep up with it. My interest really started to drop when I was run over by bot registrations and various log in issues for existing members. However, a handful of members have held on and have been posting for quite a while, so now I think it is time to be a better forum husband and fix some of the issues.

So, I am considering an upgrade to 2.X this weekend, and I need to find all of my FTP and hosting login info it has been so long...

I have been reading the upgrade guides and I will back-up and all, but is there anything I should need to worry about by jumping from such and old version to a new one?

cicka:
There is nothing to worry about in my opinion. But do remember to make a backup of the database before you upgrade though.

Sorck:
1.1.x to 2.0.2 is covered by the Large Upgrade package so as long as you're in the 1.1.x series you should be fine - the upgrade package is designed to upgrade between these versions I believe.

And a file backup as well.

Some other points worth mentioning.

1. Mods designed to work with 1.x.x will NOT work with 2.x. You will need to find the 2.x version or equivalent.

2. Themes designed to work with 1.x.x will NOT work with 2.x. Again you'll need to find the 2.x version or equivalent.

3. Notify all the members well in advance that the site will be down for a day - you'll need to test and check it's working correctly before you let the members back in to minimise complaints.

Plan what you intend to do step by step and stick to the plan, it's easy to get sidetracked so get the base forum up and running with board permissions and setup using the default theme before you start tinkering with Mods and Themes.

Remember, the upgrade REPLACES ALL the php files on your forum install, it doesn't just patch them so any personal code modifications you have made in the past will be removed. As others have mentioned. BACKUP both the Database AND the Forum Files before you do anything.

For File backup, I use the File Manager within my Control Panel to compress each directory in turn and then download the archive files one by one. Some hosts will complain if you start downloading loads and loads of files, like in your attachments directory. Similarly, if you're using the Large Upgrade zip file upload it as the zip and use the CP File Manager to unzip it in the root of your forum. Then run the upgrader.

I don't really have much in the way of mods or custom code, so that will be minimal. Thanks for the replies and advice!
