Making Files / folders writable when installing upgrades or add-ons

(1/1)

I have been having problems with this for awhile, where I cannot install anything automatically without it telling me I need to make some files or folder writeable, and then if I enter the FTP login info, it doesn't work correctly.

So, to install anything I have to go in and manually make changes to the specified files.

I am worried that I am leaving files with permissions that could pose a security risk.  What should I do to make sure I am properly protected?

Do you get any errors in your forum error log?

CHMOD all your SMF folders to 755 to see if it helps. If it's a problem with installing mods, create a folder called temp inside your Packages folder and CHMOD that new folder to 777. Then try installing the mods again.

What errors are you getting when you try to install them? If you are just getting that FTP login page, try asking your host to see if they know the correct parameters to enter there. Usually it's just a path that was entered incorrectly.

Thanks, I'll give the temp folder thing a shot.  I remember doing that once before, but I think I have deleted that temp folder afterwards.

As for the FTP, there is some issue where there root folder has been named two different things at different times, I think now it is "/f1/" and they have not provided symbolic links or anything to provide backwards compatibility.

That is more likely the culprit.   Which file is it that stores the root path in SMF?

Thanks!

There is no file that stores the root path for SMF. The Settings.php file may give you an idea of what to put for the path. Usually it's something like public_html/path_to_smf/
