How to Develop a Search Engine using PHP mysql?

I am a student of MSc Computer Science and have to develop a search engine for one of my module. I am new and do not know how to start it at all. Please help me that what component a search has and how to develop it. I have to develop it using PHP and MySql.

Well, you would use a search indexer.

This should get your started... http://sphinxsearch.com/ and is a much better place to research.

Big forums use sphinx as a backend search indexer - combined with php and mysql.
