Moving to New Server 50k Attachments Can I delete?

Hello,

I am moving to a new server and in the process of backing up my files I have discovered that my Attachments folder has over 50,000 files in it.

What are these and can I safely delete them, It's taking forever to download them and it will take weeks if I need to upload.

If you want to loose the attachments, then yes you can for sure.

However, if you want to keep them, assuming that you may be on a VPS or a dedicated server with such huge amount of attachments, you can probably compress them using command line and move them over to the new server. We can guide you through this process if you are interested in doing so.

is it cPanel hosting? if so then download zipped backup and upload the file into new server and then unzip, it will be way faster than downloading every file separately

Hi kevoon, which version of SMF. I forget what's available for 1.x, but for 2.0 in the Attachments and Avatars settings page is the ability to prune attachments. Try running that to get that to get the size down. Also if you haven't done so, move the avatars to their own folder. Kinda forget how's that done though. ::)

Also do try compressing that folder as it'll also persevere the integrity of the attachments.

Important Notice: Do you use Filezilla?  Avatars and Attachments lost?
