smf 2.02 folder permissions after install

hello all,

fist i'd like to say thanks for the free forum software. After much trial and error, I have it installed on a shared hosting, in the htdocs folder of a wordpress application vault install ( i thought this might be helpful to someone who has wordpress installed through an application vault, and wants SMF 2.02 on their site - it took three different techs at my host to find someone who could knew where the install needed to be). (also, another tip I found out- when you name the forum folder keep it lower case, as the browser is case sensitive)

Anyway, my question is this;

When I was installing SMF, i set everything in the directory to chmod 777, and everything went smoothly.

So now I have everything installed, I want to be as safe as possible- is there a guide anywhere that lays out the optimal individual folder permissions AFTER install? I read somewhere that 777 is ok for everything but this doesn't seem right. As I said though, i'm not sure, and i'm only learning all of this stuff.

(ps- the captcha image for posting on here is an absolute nightmare to read  :))

Welcome to the ol' nuthouse, Joey!

If you go to Admin>Package Manager>File permissions and set that to "Standard", you won't go far wrong. :)

Whilst I'm here, you may want to have a read through our wiki, to see what sort of weird'n'wonderful things you can do.

Hi again all, Looking for a little more help if possible!   :D

i have successfully put the forum on my site. Im using 2.0.2, and the theme is BR Finale by Crip.

So i'm at the point where I think i need to add some MODS, but i really don't know which ones. I realise this is a broad question-

It's a sports forum offshoot of a sports site- can you guys recommend a general list of advised solid mods that will help keep it spam secure, and helpful and as cool as possible, (also I read somewhere I need a GD Mod for avatars?)

Again, I know this is a broad question.

All help greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Shabadoo!

Hey Joey.

You might be better asking that 'broad question' separately from this current topic as it doesn't seem related.

I'm only suggesting this as I, personally, don't normally revisit a topic that no longer interests me - especially once it seems to have been resolved. However, you're opening up a new line of enquiry which I (and potentially others) might miss, as it's unrelated to the original post.

Just trying to help, buddy  :-X
