Unknown Error when upgrading from 1.1.16 to 2.02

(1/1)

Teria:
Hi everybody,

I'm new here and already at my wit's end. I am trying to test upgrade my forum copy to 2.02 before doing something horrible to my real forum. However, now I'm doing something horrible to my copy forum.

I started upgrading and immediately got this message:

--- Quote ---Updating Your SMF Install!
The upgrader found some old or outdated language files, for the forum default language, german.

Please make certain you uploaded the new versions of all the files included in the package, even the theme and language files for the default theme.
   [SKIP] [Try English]

--- End quote ---

Ok, so I had forgotten to upload the german language package. I tried the utf8 version first but still got the same message, so I manually deleted all utf8 stuff and installed the "normal" german language package.
Same message again, so I chose to TRY ENGLISH and went on. I was asked to login with my Admin name, did that and happily proceeded to:

--- Quote --- Critical Error!
The upgrade script cannot find script.js or it is out of date. Make sure your theme paths are correct. You can download a setting checker tool from the Simple Machines Website

--- End quote ---

So I spent a while browsing through the SMF forum help cries and finally set all folder permissions to 755 and all file permissions to 644.

Which led to:

Executing database changes
Please be patient - this may take some time on large forums. The time elapsed increments from the server to show progress is being made!
Executing upgrade script 1 of 2.
Executing: "Updating and creating indexes..." (1 of 19 - of this script)

!!
Error!

--- End quote ---

And this is where I stand. Upgrade process froze at 14 % and

--- Quote ---: 34 , 34 .

--- End quote ---

- whatever that is.

What can I do? What did I do WRONG?

Teria:
Oh wow. I found some help in this thread: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=355649.msg2429118#msg2429118 and ran repair_settings.php. Turns out there were several wrong paths. The thing is running now... hope it works out.

Teria:
Yayness! Everything's completed! Now... I'm stuck at an index.php file that reads:

--- Quote ---Maintenance Mode
Okay faithful users...we're attempting to restore an older backup of the database...news will be posted once we're back!

--- End quote ---

All upgrade stuff has been deleted, so I can go neither onward nor back.

:(

Teria:
... fixed it by changing Maintenance Mode in settings.php to 0. Looks like it worked. Sorry for bothering you guys but maybe some other poor lost soul can learn from my stupidity. :)

Please close this thread.
