What does the backup sql file set as db user & password?

GunslingerAU:
Hi,

I'm just trying to work with a backup file from SMF 1.1.16, and am having issues importing it to another server. Just so I can rule out one possible issue, could someone please confirm what I would set the database name / username / password to?  Should it be that of the forum's ACTUAL database, or the username and password of the administrator who created the backup?

Many thanks!

Arantor:
The backup file does not contain any DB username/password.

It should be the forum's actual database, since that's where it's going to get the information from.

GunslingerAU:
Sorry, you've lost me. Just to paint a picture, I'm trying to import a friend's SMF forum into vBulletin for testing, and I'm a total newb. Are you saying I shouldn't be using a backup file for this at all?

Or are you saying I can use that file, but need to use the actual database's username and password to access the data within the backup? (If so, do I also have to rename the backup to be that of the original database name or anything?)

Thanks/apologies in advance!  :-[

Arantor:
So you have a backup. You need to put the backup into a real database somewhere in order for either SMF or vBulletin to use it. Then whatever username and password is used to access that database is what you give to vBulletin.

To explain the apparent convolution, a database backup is not the raw data. It is a series of instructions that, when run, put the data into the database. The database itself is responsible for handling it and arranging it how it sees fit, so the backup is a series of instructions to rebuild it rather than the literal information, if that makes sense.

Since that's the case you have to create a database, put the data into it using the backup SQL file then point vBulletin at it.

However if you're looking to convert to vBulletin, you'd likely get better support there...

GunslingerAU:
Ok, that's excellent - many thanks. As I said - total newb.

Yes, I wouldn't pester you guys with stuff re the other side of the fence! :)
