Aquilo:
this is a crazy argument :D if any Search engine is having a problem gathering information from any document written in XHTML it is so out dated it's not worth using!

"Spider" is a term to describe a piece of code made to scan for meta tags and and information it programed to collect, the only Search engines that don't have spiders in use are the ones that purchase the database content. and these spiders are being programed not to collect meta tags so much anymore.

now I have a meta maker on my site that can crawl or spider or scan or what ever you want to call it and get the meta tags of your site, this script written in php use the function get_meta_tags() and I have no problem what so ever collecting XHTML meta tags.

--- Quote ---"Search engine" n.
(1) A software program that searches a database and gathers and reports information that contains or is related to specified terms.
(2) A website whose primary function is providing a search engine for gathering and reporting information available on the Internet or a portion of the Internet.
--- End quote ---
It don't matter how a search engine collect it's information they can spider for it or lease it all a search engine does is "searches a database and gathers and reports information".

dschwab9:
I found out that the problem was the "content" attribute being after the "name"

I'm now using

<meta  name="keywords" content="word1, word2, etc." />

Instead of:

<meta  content="word1, word2, etc." name="keywords" />

And it works fine.  I don't think it should matter, but it did  ???

Just so you know, dschwab9, I use analogies a lot.  Maybe this gets on your nerves, or other people's nerves - and, if so, I'm sorry.... but it's a habit.

xhtml is the new specification from the World Wide Web Consortium.  It's kind of like the new way to do power plugs, or a new way to do IDE (like Serial ATA), or a new kind of faster processor. (like 64 bit ones)  I use these analogies because I think you are more likely to understand why xhtml is better if you know why, for example, Serial ATA is better than plain ol' ATA.  I give that example because it is more widely known, and easier to explain.

However, I can explain why xhtml is faster.  Number 1, it parses faster.  Number 2, some browsers like Mozilla won't work well without it sometimes.  Number 3, not using it is like not using periods and commas and etc. - sure, you can, but... I guess I'm the wrong person to ask, because I always try my best to use correct grammar, spelling, etc.

If the order of te attributes matter to a search engine, I certainly hope you're not paying for that service.  I mean, would you pay for a scanner that only worked if you put the paper in landscape?  How about a lamp that only turns on if it's pointing straight down?
Of course, you've not said you ARE paying for this, but I'm just tring to point out that it is certainly an inferior product.  There are search engines that work properly, soda machines that don't eat your money, and books that aren't glued shut.  So why don't you use these (obviously better) things?

(btw, yes, I saw your complaint aimed at me.  I was looking in the recycle bin board.... didn't mean to invade privacy, was just looking for things I could clean up from there.)

I understand, but you also don't use smilies, so people don't know you're joking

Speaking of plugs and SATA, I don't like the plugs the SATA uses.  Too flimsy and easy to come unplugged/break.  Just my opinion, if anyone cares  :D Other than that, SATA is great

I'm not.

On my scanners you can only put the paper in one way anyway, since the scanner is 8.5x11 and the paper is too  :P

So just because a search engine is inferior, does that mean potential visitors to my site aren't going to run searches on it?  Like I said, it is some of the smaller ones that have the problem.  I spend some time once a month or so submitting to some of the smaller engines, and that's where I see these weird things pop up.  A lot of them are common non-us based search sites, and I actually get some visitors from them.

Search engines are a bit different than your other analogies.  Unlike scanners, hard drives, lamps, etc. - you can't choose just one.  The more links to your site you have out there, the better.

So you're saying in the future I should edit the post to be empty, then delete it?  :D  ;D  :D  ;D

I realized about 30 minutes later that you probably weren't as serious as you sounded and that my reply wasn't very nice, so I removed it.

I hope that with SMF, topics are better to find with a seach engine. And that if you click on the link in a seach engine, you will forward to the topic and not the index of your forum.
