SMF 1.x License (preferred) vs BSD license

<< < (3/3)

Suki:

--- Quote ---If my son goes to college and allow others to take a look at his thesis then copy it ... I mean others don't pay for his tuition fees, boarding room fees, etc.

--- End quote ---

Your example doesn't really fit here.

Porting that example to open source:

The one who copied your son would have to give credit to your son and this person should state that he/she based his/her own thesis on your son's thesis.

There is nothing wrong with closed/private software, we won't discourage anyone for going closed, we just prefer the open source way, that's it.

Kindred:
also....  if they fork the SMF code, it is no longer SMF and they can not call it SMF.
(SMF is a wholly owned registered trademark of Simple Machines)

Good to hear your thoughts pranalee. I'm sure many feel the same. I think it took some on the team to even change their mind set when the license was changed. :-) Its a way forward for us hopefully.
