Database backup help!!

<< < (3/6) > >>

Jimmy96:
Database that was created on May 16th amounts = 26 MB, but database that was created on May 7th amounts 116 MB's, i guess there's something wrong with that...

Antechinus:
I'd say your May 16th backup has severe problems.

MrPhil:
I hope you didn't use the SMF admin backup function. It's a load of crap with many known problems. You have to use the phpMyAdmin DB Export function, or some equivalent external database utility, to get a reliable backup. If the size of the backup dropped greatly, it's quite possible that it's incomplete. The earlier backup wasn't uncompressed/unzipped and the later one was compressed/zipped, by any chance? That would at least partly account for the drop in size.

What SMF version is this, so we can move this topic to the right board?

Kindred:
Mr Phil...   that's a bit too strong.
It is not a load of crap...   it worked perfectly for me on 4 or 5 different forums and servers. The only time it didn't work was with a database exceeding 2 gig.

that being said, yes, there are known issues with the internal backup routines.

Arantor:
It's not a bit too strong at all. Not only are there issues with it timing out and not escaping things properly, I've seen more than one actually-corrupted backup, as evidenced on this very forum, so a backup tool that actually fails on even this most basic premise would be considered a failure.

(If it fails for things outside of its control, that's one thing. But if it fails for things it has control over, and it has, including for me to start with, I'd say that's a huge problem - and why I stopped relying on it years ago.)
