Thanks for your help - yes... Hostgator has a nice price, but I've already run into issues with various limitations on what you can and can't do.
Douglas:
First mistake... using Hostgator for anything. Ditch 'em.
Second mistake, SMF is pretty SE friendly as it stands, especially with the emphasis being more on content than fancy URLs. In some cases, you'll actually be penalized by using trickery.
Third (not a mistake), there are sites larger than Kindle Boards using SMF. Just hunt around for 'em. (Red and White Kop should be the first one you look at)
Something to think about. :)

Welcome to the site, first off I would advise you too stay away from hostgater, they are a known overseller and you can come into many problems with them.

I don't quite understand this? Why are so many people against one of the most popular hosts available? When was the last time that you actually used Hostgator? Apparently not recently. Since you seem to be so against them, why would you?
Fact: I moved more than 107 of my domains and over 60 of my customers sites along with my own sites from Godaddy to Hostgator more than five years ago. Every single transfer went without a hitch and I nor any of my customers have had even one issue since, not even one second of known downtime.
Fact 2: Almost every single host on the market is an overseller. Unless one is looking to pay for their own dedicated server, they will be sharing space and bandwidth with others.
I now have two "Silver" reseller accounts at Hostgator. Each has more than 30 sites hosted on them. I still have plenty of space on each and neither have ever reach their monthly allowed bandwidth.
To the OP. Everyone has their own opinions for their own reasons but if you are fine with Hostgator, stick with them. Don't let someone talk you into moving simply because they may have had a bad experience in the past.
;)
Arantor:
There are a number of horror stories about Hostgator, probably as many as success stories.
Question: how many of your sites are static content, or low-traffic dynamic content? If either of these is the case, they're going to be just fine. But once there's any amount of traffic at all, they start having trouble.
