maintenance db backup

I have been probing my smf server and have concluded that Forum Maintenance > backup the db ( tables and data) is done with mysqldump.  Am I correct?  Thanks

Yes, that will create an SQL dump. Do not rely on the SMF backup script to be your only backup source though. It is very buggy and unreliable. You should take a backup from cPanel, PHPMYADMIN ( or SSH if you know how ).
