Forum spamming. please help

yourwealth:
hi guys

I have a forum for my gpt site run on shiftcode script. I am having a big problem with spamming. Even when the forum link is not place where persons can see it etc i'm still having persons signing up for the forum and spamming.

One time after taking down the forum for awhile and not it much attention I had to deal with over 3000 members (and none of them was from my site) spamming.

How can I prevent this? Need to prevent them from finding my forum, posting and probably joining without preventing my members from joining the forum

Is there any forum connect script that allows members to be able to use their site username to login to forum without having to join the forum?

i'm using SMF 1.1.16

There are Mods you can install that will stop bots from entering and doing automated spams. Look in the mod section for anti-spam.

MrPhil:
It sounds like you have at least two different issues here. One is that people or bots are signing up directly for your forum (SMF, I presume) and spamming. This can be dealt with by a number of SMF mods, including "Bad Behavior" and "Questions and Answers", to make it harder for bots and spam farms to sign up. There is also a CAPTCHA level to set, but it doesn't do that much good any more. You can also require email verification by the new member upon signup, or even approval by the administrator for new members (e.g., checking that they are already main site members). Note that all this does is present a "hard shell" to keep spammers from signing up -- once they're in, you can set a minimum number of posts before links in posts or signature updates are allowed (this may require mods for SMF 1). That's the only "behavioral" checks I know of. There's nothing to stop a spammer from making a huge number of posts right off the bat to get past post-count limits. SMF 2 may be a little better in this respect, building in a lot of stuff that was mods in SMF 1.

The other issue is not having a separate sign-on for the forum, but to use some common sign-on. I know that people have integrated SMF into larger sites in this way, but I don't know the details or whether there are mods to help with this. It may require some custom coding to do the integration. I know it's been discussed a number of times, so a search would probably help here. And of course, it's up to you to regulate new member signup to keep out spammers. No point in armoring the forum's front door and putting lots of locks on it (anti-spambot measures for SMF signup) if you leave the backdoor (access via your main site) wide open. By the way, once you have SMF integrated, you should be able to turn off SMF registration and log-in, forcing all members to sign up and come in through your site.

You may want to consider doing two things: switching to SMF 2.0.2, and using one of a number of SMF "Portals" to present other material on your site. The forum becomes a major component of the site, but is then well integrated for you.

http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1516 with a few forum content related questions =  many years with zero spam problems here. Says 1.1.7, works fine in 1.1.16.
