How to prevent fake users from registering?

(1/1)

dand:
Hi,
From time to time, every week or so, I have some fake users registered, usuality a group of 3, like so:

username, name, email:
fernandogoul615    fernandogoul615    duGiogiwllumKyla@hotmail.com
buddygertsen511    buddygertsen511    SeaobsonqeysRood@hotmail.com
volneyeskese718    volneyeskese718    baLoyjuemattaWan@hotmail.com

They are all fake, and they don't post anything.

I am using SMF 1.1.16, captcha is on.

How do I prevent this?

K@:
You can go to your ban list and ban all Hotmail addresses, if you like.

Or, maybe, set up your htaccess file to restrict them?

You may want to look through these, too.

Search the forum, truckloads of tips and discussions already posted.

Ditch the captcha, this mod (with a few forum content related questions) stops 100% of the fakes:

Lots of information on the forum about these spammers.  I think the best defense is a mod that checks the username, IP and email address at Stop Forum Spam.  I use this mod http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=1519 and it works great.
