Maintaining user identity
Leemy:
When my forum first started, the first 100-200 active posters all vaguely knew each other, and people's usernames reflected their school and name. Now, as it's grown, there are a lot of anonymous posters-- some of whom are contributing members and some who just talk trash and do not contribute to the discussion.
What's the best way to maintain user identity? Logging in via facebook? I imagine someone could create a secondary facebook just like they create a junk e-mail address, but maybe that would help.
Kindred:
do you really care that much?
I am Kindred on most forums (except where the name is already taken) and I rarely use my real name online.
Same goes for most people, I'd imagine.
So... if they are contributing members, does it matter what name they use? If they are flamers, trolls or spammers, then ban them.
Yoshi:
I think it's up to the user to decide whether he/she/it should use his/her/its real name.
I never use my real name online except for signing a PM. But then I don't hand out my last name.
Old Fossil:
The only time I have ever used my real name is on BroadStar.
When on air (eventually) I can't exactly be DJ Old Fossil otherwise I use a name relevant to me.
At Pixel Mansion I use Big Ears due to my favourite Star Trek character and because I use cordless headphones.
K@:
"K@" is my real name, pretty-well. :)
