setting up forum just for personal use
Krofko666:
Hello everyone!
I was wondering is it possible to set up the forum, so it works offline (not completely necessary), and basically just for me. Without the use of FTP, just to have it on my hard drive.
I would like to use it for making notes for school.
Thanks a lot for the possible answer!
Chas Large:
Try EasyPHP or XAMPP which installs Apache and MySql as a stand alone server on your PC, to which to can install SMF and play to your hearts content.
Of course, you'll get more fun if you share it with others ;)
Krofko666:
It's not that I intend to be selfish, who knows if the notes will be any good anyway :D
Thank you for your advice, I'll try it out.

So I downloaded the WAMPSERVER, but I have no idea how to get SM on it. I've tried searching but can't find it :(
I manage to get to the admin settings menu through http:\\localhost , but can't figure out how to set up anything from there.
Help would be much appreciated :D Thank you.

OK, normally I would say that using another software is not what this forum is for but as it may help others, I'll explain.
Install Wampserver - You've done this bit.
Duting installation, Wampserver creates a folder called C:\wamp with a sub-folder called \www This is your local webspace where you create your website(s).
In this folder create a new folder for your SMF installation, on mine I called it test1
Copy the contents of your chosen SMF installation archive file - dearchive the contents to this folder.
Right Click the Wampserver ICON and select phpMyAdmin. Create a new database and give it a unique name for your forum, no need to create any tables, usernames or passwords, the default will be used.
In your chosen (during installation) browser, type localhost in the address line to bring up the Wampserver configuration screen. Under Your Projects, you'll see the name of the folder you created. Click this and you should be rewarded with the installer page for SMF. Follow the instructions and using the database name you created earlier with the username of root and no password - these are defaults set within the Wampserver installer.
I've just done all of the above on a Windows 7 PC and was eventually rewarded with a fully operational test forum running locally.
Next time you want to use the site, just makesure the Wampserver is up and running and then type localhost/yourfoldername and optionally /index.php to access the forum.
