ViennaBBS
« on: April 29, 2012, 02:54:39 PM »
Its been a while since there were any updates on forks in this board - but I like to mention that the fork project I talked about is still in development. ViennaBBS is a modest fork which won't change eveything - right now it has board types(boards as gallery, blog, event, downloads and docs, with possible more to come), some minor changes + a different take on the themesystem, which of course includes a new default theme. It will also be compatible with SMF mods and databse structure, so you can safely return to SMF should you not want to use it. SMF themes are not compatible though, at least not in a good way, as too much is changed in the default fallback theme.

Features added/planned:
- separate mobile/tablet templates(checks already included)
- portal system, simplified(front page functionality already added)
- flexible menu system (several main menu items auto-added upon new approvals etc. already added)
- board types, with separate main pages that summarize the different types -> a blog section for all the blog boards for example.

My plan is to release it on GitHub eventually, but until then theres some dev logs on the site: http://www.viennabbs.org/index.php?board=1.0

How the board types work are also partly shown there: http://www.viennabbs.org

I like the fonts you're using. I like your breadcrumbs (remind me of the ones in TBG that I posted about).

Try the breadcrumbs inside a topic at 200% font size. :P

Not on FF if you scale the text only. They break terribly. Same would apply to any browser which allows you to resize text only. If you're just zooming everything on Chrome (which allows bugger all options) then sure, it wont break, but that's not going to be adequate for a default theme IMHO.

This is why I don't like that style of breadcrumb. You can get them looking slick if you choose the right screen resolution, theme width, font size and breadcrumb content, but they're easy to break once you start letting people do their own thing. Now if you can get that style and make it robust enough for general use, I'd certainly be taking notice.

Mm, I hear you. Its a thing I haven't looked into yet, but the plan is to transform it to use css only. I'll be sure to check font-resize-only on FF when I do.

Yes it should be possible to improve it. The only image that is really needed is the divider. It will still probably look slightly odd once the content goes to a second line though. I've never been able to think of a way of dealing with that really well.

Hello Bloc, Thanks for the update!

What licenses are you applying to your fork?

Thanks

It will prob. be the same as SMF, though I have looked at what Ichbin has applied for TinyPortal. So BSD or Mozilla Public 2.0.

Thanks. With that, I've added you to the list of known open-source forks: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=446866.0

Sugested that too. Hey ho. I'd link you to the original discussion but it's not visible to most people (seekrit team board stuff that is more dangerous than wikileaks).

The ViennaBBS project is shelfed for an indefinite time, due to lack of time and interest. The theme parts/experiments from it will live on though, but taking on a full fork was more than I had time for, unfortunately. Your best bet now for any alternatives to SMF would be Wedge - or waiting for smCore to run with a forum module.

Sorry to see that you often lack the interest to finish a project that you've started, bloc.

I hope you'll have better time one day for all this. ;)

But life firstly, of course. ;)

That was a fair bit of work you did. It's great that you will be able to pull the theme out and apply it to other things.
I read what you said (in another topic) about working on the things YOU feel most motivated to work on.
That makes a lot of sense.

All the best in your new venture!

I agree with this. I wish you all the best in your real life bloc. Though if you wish to start something like this, do it in a group. It is better since some other people might want to help you finish it properly.
