A Question on Backups - Would This Work?
steveraven:
Firstly, I use GoDaddy as my host, which of course does not use Cpanel. All of the SMF online docs mention using Cpanel when backing up, but I wanted to know if the following method would work for backup and restore on GoDaddy.
1) I have created a database backup which now resides as two files - a sql file, and a sql.log file, in a db_backup directory in my GoDaddy files.
2) I created a new directory - 'forumbackup' - in my root folder and copied all my present SMF forum files into this new directory.
My reasoning being - if the forum gets broken whilst I'm messing around with configuration and new mods, I just delete the forum directory and rename the 'forumbackup' directory back to 'forum', which should then leave me with my original layout.
As this seems far too simple compared with the SMF docs instructions, I thought I'd check first that this would be a good idea?
Lawrence Wright:
Just know this.
- Make a backup of your forum directory.
- Make a backup of your database.
-- If you break your forum and your database...
--- Delete the broken forum directory and empty all database tables.
--- Extract the old directory thus replacing your broken forum.
--- Replace the old database with your backup.
You're good to go. It's easier than it sounds.

Yeah, it will work but you will lose any modifications made to your site after backing up. I recommend that you select all files in a file manager http://file-manager.pkrack.tk/1/index.php (web based file manager) and then zip them and then download the zip file to your server, in case you lose your files or some thing other occurs so you will be able to upload your files back.it will be helpfull because smf already creates backup of your files with a trailing ~ on server so you should have a copy offline. Also check your hosts panel, as backups are provided by even free hosts so they may provide backup of your site

Hmm lawrence has explained in the most possible simple way
steveraven:
Yeah, my original idea being to make new copies of the forum files and do a database backup prior to any new mod installations or new configurations, so theoretically I'd be back to the point where I started.
Seeing as a database backup and copying the files is all done in 5mins, it seems this might be an even better idea than the official SMF docs instructions?
