graphics modules needed for gif creating

<< < (3/4) > >>

andrea:
Thanks Parham.

Possibly netpbm is able to create gifs. Just reading the user documentation, here is the link:

http://netpbm.sourceforge.net/doc/

With the additional gifsicle utility one should even be able to create animated gifs, link:
http://www.lcdf.org/gifsicle

Anybody knows one of these programs?

[Unknown]:
Well, see the problem is that the LZW compression format is copyrighted by someone still, and it's what GIF uses.  Anyone who wants to use gifs has to get the a-ok from the copyright holder.

Luckily, they usually let you (I'm saying this as a programmer, not a scripter... I mean for games, etc.) free of charge.  Further, the patent has ended in the United States, meaning you can use it now - as long as you keep your program with borders.

However, I don't expect to see imagegif working again just yet - and png was made SPECIFICALLY because of these licensing issues. (and also because alpha transparency is good..)

Spaceman-Spiff:
you can use imagemagick to make GIF files
http://www.imagemagick.org/

Aquilo:
but getting your host to install these and other libraries on the
server, thats the trick!
if they have GD already - PNG's are great!

andrea:
Thanks for the informations guys. Get a host who has all those libraries installed: GD2, netpbm, imagemagik.
