Customizing SMF > SMF Coding Discussion

Where does SMF increment the user post count?

Flynnn:
Well alright then... So much for trying to settle the hate.

Arantor:
Oh, there's no hate. It's really quite simple: you don't really want what I have to offer, so I just won't offer it to you. Saves us the time and aggravation on both sides, no?

Flynnn:
I think you need to take a step back, dude, I never said I didn't want what you have. I just said I didn't want you to try and make it better by requiring certain questions that are otherwise not related to what I want. At this point you are making things more difficult for both of us by insisting on these questions, and now you are going so far as to basically say "my way or the high way". Yeah, I know I'm doing that too, but the difference is that my way is your way with a few less steps. Your way is my way with more complication. I'd just like to take the simplest route.

This is the last time I'm going to post about this, I should hope that you reconsider.

Just to jump in here, not that I can offer much assistance in what you're trying to do. Arantor is probably one of the most knowledgeable people in SMF (and likely other things). I think his approach and biggest question is "what are you trying to accomplish?" Your approach seems to be small questions without the context of your ultimate goal (refer to the Subject). I'm not even sure what "your way" is. So, it's rather understandable why Arantor is dismissing himself from here. :)

Arantor:
It's not 'my way or the highway'. This is a public forum, everyone here is a volunteer, doing this in our free time. You don't like how I work, that's fine, I don't have to help you, certainly not in my spare time (though, frankly, there is no chance I'd work with you as a paid consultant either)

You and I have different methods, and no matter how much you think your way and my way are the same, they are not. Mine involves actually understanding every aspect of the system, understanding what making one change will do to the rest of the system, and it focuses on where you're trying to go, not how you're trying to get there.

I'll put this as simply as I can: your method is like going to the doctor and saying 'I want drug X for this condition', while the doctor is trying to diagnose you, understand all the symptoms in case drug Y is really the better choice, and here I'm the doctor.

What you think is the simplest route is probably neither the simplest nor the fastest route to get to where you're going. I ask questions because I think they're important. You know, things I've learned from experience of working with SMF, writing dozens and dozens of mods (including the helpdesk on this very site), and I know only too well that fixating on what you think you need to do is not actually that helpful.

So like I said, what I'm offering is not what you want, and I hope that others will be able to provide you what you think you want rather than what you actually need.

Case in point: changing post counts. Why? Why worry about it? Well... let's see, there's automatic and manual updating of post counts (which is done in different places, and in different ways, not to mention changing post counts when posts get deleted), there's all the reshuffling of groups that's done afterwards automatically, including the situation where you can actually if you're not careful promote someone out of a post count group and into the admin group simply by misconfiguring the groups or blindly altering the code without understanding all the consequences to it. But that's stuff you could well have run into, which is why I asked. I guess you've never heard of 'measure twice, cut once' or things like that.

Still, you know best. Hope others will be more patient and willing to answer your questions, because I have no intention of reconsidering my position: it doesn't change the fact that what you want is not what I'm prepared to offer. Good evening.

@mashby: You got it exactly.
