I think it would be better if you say your dog called (in an evil and nonchalant type of voice) and said the cat was dying ;)

you could always hook your phone to the modem and set the audio input device as the receiver!

and when the boss asks why no one can get your phone say they are too cheap to buy a Mic!  ;D
