it has a overview window where you can see the pic in total when you are zoomed in on a pic.

Its in PS also ;)

I know, but the image shown is not 1:1, small images are enlarged a bit to fit the preview area :(

I'm doing these graphics as icons, but are not for the system, I want to save them as GIFs :)

still searching.  in the meanwhile, have you tried starting with a file that is the size of the finished icon, but then zooming in on it?  that way you won't have to shrink it, and you can do it pixel by pixel.

that's what I'm doing... I even set up the PS grid to show me each pixel in the canvas... basically, my problem, is the lack of a preview window in 1:1 size, cause the navigation one is a bit larger

oh well... I guess I'll get used to it after a while... it's just that it's a bit hard to picture how the image is looking when you're working on the zoomed-in version

thank you all for your help :)

note: I'm working on a large smilies set for my page, but I'll share it here when I have them ready

I use ArcSoft Photostudio.

It shows a 2 to 1 preview, of each layer.

SUre it's not the best, but I love it and will never change.
