Well, if you're using cpanel:

Login and click on "MySQL Databases"
Scroll down to the bottom. Select the username that you're using for the IPB database from the "User:" drop-down list. Select the SMF database from the "Database:" drop-down list and click "Add user to db". This will allow you to access the SMF and IPB databases with the same username and password.
