Unsend PM (ASAP!!!)
(1/1)
Kat9119:
How would I go about unsending a PM? Its my own personal PM I'd like to delete and resend. As admin I shouldn't have reacted to something so strongly and don't want to look like an ass.
I already know where the PM table is, but I'm told there is an "inbox" and "outbox" one and its easy to delete from my outbox but not the other users inbox. I don't care if they got notifications that they had a PM. I really need to delete this PM ASAP before they login and see it.
I just don't know how to, can someone help?

They have probably already received the email notification which includes the pm content, so just prepare some appropriate excuses.
Aleksi "Lex" Kilpinen:
There is no way you can completely undo sending a pm in a default SMF installation. And because we concider the PMs private, we will not go into explaining how to find a specific PM in the recipients inbox.

I've heard this response here a dozen times lol. I already know how to see users PM's if I wished to, and yes it is in my agreement when you register that I have the right to read PMs if needed. Although I don't. I just made sure to cover my butt if I ever needed to.
In this case, it didn't matter regardless because I found out the user had Email alerts for PMs turned on, so they saw the original PM anyhow.
With AOL Email back in the days, you were able to "unsend" email to people if they were an AOL member. I was hoping there was someway to do that here. I guess from now on I'll have to wait 24hrs before I respond to stuff LOL
MrPhil:
If you know your way around the database, of course you can (at least) edit an intemperate reply -- if they haven't seen it yet. It would look pretty bad for you to change it after they have already read it! I suppose something (a mod) might even be done to completely retract a PM if the recipient hasn't seen it yet (that wouldn't be unethical). However, if an email gets sent to tell them about the PM, you're out of luck -- no way to retract an email once it's sent (I would think it not that difficult a technical challenge to do, but for whatever reason it hasn't been implemented).
Best lesson is to learn to cool down before pressing the "Launch missile" button, or posting something you might regret -- something that I sometimes need to relearn the hard way. If you send a letter and change your mind, you used to be able to pay a fee to the Post Office and have the letter intercepted and returned (I don't know if they still offer that service). The Simpsons had a episode ("Blood Feud") where Homer was frantically trying to get back a nasty letter to Mr. Burns. With phone, fax, texting, PMs, email, etc., your words get there immediately and can't be recalled.
