[Rewrite] Logging in

(1/1)

Jakob von Feldern:
I fixed it to be a little more impersonal, just like most of my other recent ones.

--- Quote ---By now, users might be newly registered or they might simply have been logged out from a previous visit. However, there is normally a choice between the login screen and the quick login in either case.

The login screen

Since this screen (accessed from the login option of the main menu) is not only where they will normally be taken upon completing registration, but it is also the first thing they will see in any 'members only' forum.

While the username and password fields should be self-explanatory, minutes to stay logged in, simply means the number of minutes that the user will stay logged in, set accordingly to whatever the user wishes. It is not advisable to enter a long time here if a user shares a computer, but they might prefer to check "Always stay logged in", if no-one else has access to their computer.

The quick login

Although many forums also have a quick login box that allows users to login directly from any page, its position on the page may vary considerably in different forums. For example, in the SMF default theme (Core, 1.1, Curve 2.0), it's in the collapsible section at the top, whereas it is more likely to be at the bottom in themes based on the older YaBB SE forums. If the user cannot see it and it has not been collapsed, it is either not enabled at all (in which case they should still be able to access the login screen from the main menu) or they are already logged in (the Main menu should include a Logout rather than Login link).

To use the quick login box, the user must enter their username and password, select their session length from the drop-down menu and click Login. Please note that Forever, like Always stay logged in, simply means that the computer should remember that user until they next choose to logout.

If the user forgets their password, they are able to reset it, in which they would need to verify it through an e-mail message.
