Here we are, the last testing step
« on: September 26, 2011, 11:55:44 AM »
This is the last (important) testing phase before being able to give the green light to the wiki translation! :D

The problem
As you may have noticed the links are a major pain when dealing with the translate extension:
1) translate an anchor makes the relative unit outdated,
2) links to other translated pages points to the English version of the page,
3) don't remember but there is more... :P

A solution
The solution we have found is the use of a template.
We know it's absolutely not "wiki-style" and it can make a bit more cumbersome editing the text, but as of now it's the best compromise we were able to find in order to provide a nice way to go around the problem.
Hopefully in the future we will find another (better) solution.

For a live example, as usual you can refer to this page (feel free to use for testing too! ;))
As you can see, there are several different kind of links:
* a link to a translated page "Posting"
* an internal link "#test1"
* a link to an untranslated page "$smcFunc".
If you look for example at the Italian translation, you may notice that:
* the link to "Posting" links directly to the "/it" subpage,
* the unit containing the internal link ("#prova1") is not marked as outdated (like for example here, where the unit is not outdate, but Mirahalo simply translated the anchor text to match the one of the translated page)
* the link to the $smcFunc (untranslated page) has an "(en)" tag next to it, the same happens also with pages marked for translation where at the moment there isn't a translation available (e.g German, please see the "Posting (en)" link)

What will change
Here it is a table summarizing the different styles of links.
wiki-link      template-equivalent
[ [destination]]      {{llink|destination}}
[ [destination#position1]]      {{llink|destination|anchor=position1}}
[ [destination|some text]]      {{llink|destination|text=some text}}
[ [destination#position1|some text]]      {{llink|destination|anchor=position1!text=some text}}
[ [#position1]]      {{llink|anchor=position1}}
[ [#position1|some text]]      {{llink|anchor=position1|text=some text}}

For the time being we will use this template only for the links pointing to other translated pages and only for the translated pages. I think they are more or less 10/12 links, no more (I still have to check).

Instructions for translators
In the new structure what must be translated is the text of the parameters anchor and text. So, taking the most complex link in the previous example:
Code: [Select]
{{llink|destination|anchor=position1!text=some text}}* llink is the name of the template and must remain unchanged (please note that the double "L" at the beginning is not a typo ;) The first "l" stands for "localized")
* destination is the target of the link and must remain unchanged
* anchor is the parameter name and must remain unchanged
* position1 is the actual anchor and must be translated to match the translated title
* text is the parameter name and must remain unchanged
* some text is a text and should be translated in the appropriate language
Additionally, in certain cases you may want to add a text in addition to the page name. No problem.
If for example you have a link [ [board]]  and you want to translate it for example to [ [board|foro]] (example taken from a Spanish translation), you can do this: {{llink|board|text=foro}}.

Final notes
As said before, these links will not be used extensively at least for now.
There are several good reasons to use them with all the links in the pages currently marked for translation, but for now it's better to wait for your feedback and see if it is an acceptable solution or not. :)

Please have a look at the test page, feel free to "play" with it and see how it works and if you like it, I'll announce in the sticky topic when the changes to the pages marked for translation  will be in place.

emanuele, please take a look at:
http://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/Personal_messages/sr-el#Opcije

I would need "profilu" instead of "profile" at the end of sentence.
At the moment code is:
Code: [Select]
{{llink|profile|text=profilu}}.The link is fine, but why text=profilu isn't showing "profilu" but "profile"?

Thanks for reporting!

An error in the template, now is fixed.
If you still see profile, clear your browser's cache. ;)

...php is much easier than wikimedia templates! :P
