As noted in the report, it seems this behavior is by design, as "recent" does not mean "future", rather (near) past.

If you check SMF1.x calendar, the ssi_recentEvents() really show upcoming events up to something like x number of days in advance.

The events displayed by the calendar are not calculated by ssi_recentEvents(). They are all events around that selected date (both past and future).
While ssi_recentEvents() returns the events in the present (eventually started in the near past), which sorts of means "the recent events". Not the future events. It's not meant to show the future ones...

in that case, your understanding is different from mine.
Despite the NAME of the function, the intention as far as I am aware, has always been to show the upcoming events - from now to the limit set in the SMF admin, calendar settings.
