We do have some mods installed:

1.   No Spam by Guests!    0.2
2.   Akismet Spam Blocking 1.1.1
3.   SMF 1.0.20 / 1.1.12 Update
4.   SMF 1.0.21 / 1.1.13 Update
5.   Tapatalk SMF Plugin 1.1.0
6.   SMF 1.1.14 Update
7.   SMF 1.1.15 Update

Yes, we are installing using English (US english, in case that matters). Not sure about the settings...we do have some settings ;)

I will consider giving you access if we run out of options, but for now, I'd rather proceed as if we can resolve this without doing so.

Thanks!
Chris

Thanks for your help guys...I finally got it!  It turned out to be a permissions issue. I can't say for sure, but my guess is that the webinstaller was not able to un-tar the install package correctly.  After I set all files to be writable, the upgrade script looked completely different in the browser.

Apparently I forgot to ask about that...well good you solved it!
And thanks to take time to report the solution to your problem! ;D

ccbristo:
I guess I should also add that it would have been nice if the webinstaller was smart enough to handle the error more gracefully and report a more detailed description.

emanuele:
Looking at the code it should, there is a dedicated error string:

--- Code: --- $txt['error_horrible_chmod'] = 'The installer couldn\'t find any way to write files to your server.  Please contact your server administrator or check your settings.';

--- End code ---
So I have no idea what could be the error you encountered, also because I can't fin any "unknown error" string in the webinstaller.
