Accented characters in Search
vercingetorix:
Hi,
How does the search function treat accented characters and is there any way to tweak the standard search parameters? For example: if I search for Blücher, would it return results for Blucher and Bluecher as well and vice versa? What about Reuß: would Reuss be picked up as well?
I can't find anything on this issue in the online help or on this board and there seems to be nothing in SMF's search settings or in the available mods to help.
Doctor Deejay:
Hi, welcome to SMF! :) You might want to submit a mod request in the mod requests board. :)
vercingetorix:
Thanks for the suggestion. I'll do that, but it would help to know how accented characters are treated by the search parser now. Is ü treated the same as u, or as an entirely different character, so searching for Blucher doesn't find Blücher for example?
Arantor:
The answer is actually impossible to say given the information available in this thread.
There are multiple different search subsystems, all of which will be affected by whether your forum uses UTF-8 or not, and on top of that it can be different based on whether your server has the mbstring extension installed for PHP or not.

Thanks for that Arantor. Very helpful. I'll investigate.
