app to batch-rename files

Seph|roth:
Hey, i'm looking for a program (winxp) to auto rename all (or a selection) of files in a folder into a given format.

For example, if i have a folder with files with various unlogical filenames, i want it like this:

001.ext
002.ext
003.ext  ... etc...

Does anyone know of such a program?
Thanks!

Aquilo:
I have been using this program for years, and the same one, they made it right from the get-go I started using it on win98 and it moved to XP nicely!!

any way you would have to do it select all the file you would like to change and click Properties Plus and with multiple files selected the extension Field will be shaded check that box them put your new extension and they are all changed!!!

PropertiesPlus

hope this helps!

thanx Aquilo, but that's not what i meant... i don't need to change the extention, but the filename itself...

like, instead of having 54514.jpg, f1e521.jpg and er00er.jpg, i want them renamed to 001.jpg, 002.jpg and 003.jpg.

Aquilo:

[EDIT] well the article worked as described but still not what you wanted sorry...

Aquilo:
OK i got you one to do just what you want!!!

and it did a nice job!!!

here is a screen shot in the last window after setting it to number for mat like ?.jpg
it's default is (?) so it will number (1)(2)(3) so if you put (?).jpg they will get the extension
but look like (1).jpg(2).jpg(3).jpg so just put the ?.jpg or any extension you want.

here is a link to a screen shot on my PC http://aquilo.homeip.net/formating.gif
