How Can I Remove the Forum Tables And Create Links Instead?
cliFinc:
Hi, I want to get rid of the forum tables on my board and make them appear as links just like www.nairaland.com [nofollow]. The forums are shown as links at the top instead of tables at on the index page. How can I make my forum display categories and forums like this?
Timely help will be appreciated
MrPhil:
What exactly do you mean by "forum" in this context? There is only one forum per SMF installation; it contains categories, which in turn contain boards, which contain topics, which contain posts. If you're talking about the list of links at the top (not the featured links) under "Nigerian Forums", are they separate forums or are they three categories with a dozen or so boards under each?
Rather than trying to modify a SMF theme to display categories and boards as links (if that's what you're after), it might be easier to use SSI.php capability to roll your own "portal" page with hard coded links to SMF categories and boards. Some of the existing portal mods might even do that (have you checked them?). I suppose you could take a theme and modify the front page so that instead of listing categories as sections and boards within them, you could show them as links in that manner.
Since you'll presumably want to put other stuff on the page, I think a custom front page using SSI would be better in the long run, and using a portal mod might be even better than that. I suppose that you're trying to conserve screen space by using links instead of a table, so that you have room for other content?

Um, Nairaland doesn't run SMF any more, if you want to copy their structure you could even go as far as finding out what software they're using...

Thanks Phill for your help. I'm not very experienced in using SSI, so can you recommend any to me? You seem to understand what I want to do. Yes I want to make the categories and forums all appear on the top as links so that I can use the index page only for Hot Forum Links. I wish to get rid of the forums as they appear on SMF site, and want them to be like the one's on Nairaland.com.
Thanks
Arantor:
Why are you trying to copy Nairaland, exactly? (Even when it used to run SMF it was hard to read. Now they're not using SMF, it's even worse if at all possible)
