Placement/Alignment help, please

(1/1)

Sigh....okay folks, first thing is that I don't know this stuff, so my terminology probably won't be right.

I know what I would like to do, but I can't seem to make it happen. So...I'll describe the situation and provide supporting images, and maybe someone here can help me.

The problem:
I have a row of 5 streaming charts at the top of my forum that resides below the navigation toolbar. It currently looks like this:

However, some of my members would like those charts to be "hideable" because they are either using netbooks or mobile devices with "limited screen real estate".

To accomodate them, I figured I'd just move the row of charts up to the "folding" part where the greeting/search box/news all are. That way, they could use that little open/close arrow that's already there to hide the charts.

This is harder than I thought it would be. :'(

Through trial and error, I did manage to find the spot in the index.template.php file of the default theme that would put the chart row in the open/close section, but I can't figure out how to fix the alignment.....what I get is this:

If I try to put it to the bottom (under the news), it aligns from the center to the right (like the pic above).

If I try to put it to the top (above the greeting), it aligns to the left but gets cut-off at the center.

Now...I figure that's because there's two "half width" sectioning here. But I don't know what to tweak from here to adjust/add so that there's a full-width section to hold the charts within the folding part.

Ideally, I would like the charts to be centered with the forum like they are in the "before" pic. I would prefer it if they were at the bottom of the folding part (under the news), but if it would be easier to put them at that top (above the greeting) that would be fine too.

As another option, could I create second, separate "foldable" section where the charts currently are residing with one of those cool arrow button thingys to flip it opened and closed? Would that be easier than messing with the alignment of the upper, existing folding section? (If what I'm asking for here is really hard to do, then nevermind...I'll take whatever solution is the easiest to make happen.)

There's my delimma. Any help would be greatly appreciated. And for the record, I'm a total idiot when it comes to this stuff---feel free "dumb it down" like you're talkin' to a 2nd grader.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

Hmmm....is what I'm trying to do super-difficult?

Is there more information I can provide to explain myself better?

Would anyone care to try to help me with this, or explain why I shouldn't do it?

Pretty-please....with sugar on top? ;)
