If a topic has too many posts, lets say it has 100,000 replies will it use more resources than a topic with only less replies when it is being viewed?

I am asking that because I am thinking if locking topics with too may replies then I will create a new topic that will be used for discussing the same topic will have any benefit to my forum.

Thanks

If people view the posts in the middle of the topic then yes, more resources will be used.

But if its on the last page?

Paracelsus:
Actually, do you guys know if SMF has plans to develop a strategy that "archives" posts with a certain age in a different table or tables so that smf_messages would only deal with the "hot areas"?... I mean, for scalability sake, because the need to increase innodb_buffer_size in relation to smf_messages table becomes somewhat ridiculous at some point (mine has almost 2GB and just keeps getting larger and larger).

Paracelsus that looks like a good idea. Let me try to write a mod on my forum for that :)
