You've got it right.  For the membergroup just set the star image to what you want and set the number to 1.

As Thantos says, there is no need for a mod, nor does SImplemachines.org use any mod to do it.

Choose the image to appear, select "1" as the number.
I don't see how that is very difficult that it would need any sort of workaround or easier way...
