Arantor:
I can be a right prick but notice that I'm normally respectful to people who show respect themselves. Coming onto a forum where it is very clear that support isn't offered and expecting support is not entirely respectful.

And to a degree, the 'do a search' mentality is one of the reasons I quit the support team. It's incredibly draining to answer questions over and over and over when people cannot be bothered to put the effort in themselves to finding it. How do you think we learned? It's not like someone plugged the entire guts of SMF into my brain, I had to go away and learn. So when people come along, expecting support without apparently wanting to do any work themselves or even assuming that half an hour is too long to wait for support, you can imagine why I get pissy.

FrizzleFried:
Oftentimes,  however,  you're dealing with a NEWB who has no IDEA what they are doing.  All they know is they have a problem that needs fixed.  The come here to ASK how to fix the problem and oftentimes they get a negative reply immediately.  It's a major turn-off and I am sure,  turned more than one person away from SMF.   The "holier than thou" attitude that permeates this forum,  frankly,  sucks... but it is what it is.  I simply plow through through the tripe and attempt to mine quality information and ignore the rest... unfortunately not everyone out there has the ability to ignore the ridiculousness and focus on those trying to actually help.

Perhaps I caught you on a bad day.  Perhaps as an Englishman you were offended at being accused of being French (can I blame you? No.)... my apologies that I made this mini-rant about you... it's not... it's just the general attitude I've seen more than once here.  Is it a huge issue here?  Not really... like I said,  I'm capable of ignoring people quite well... but it DOES happen... and more so than I'd like to see... but that begs the question.. who am I?  A nobody here.

Carry on.

Arantor & FrizzleFried: I understand the circumstances, but perhaps this is not the best topic to start such a discussion in, 'ay? :)
I've asked the team to, perhaps, split this.

Arantor:
Just to summarise, again... people who don't know and would like help and try to help themselves first are always given more respect than those who don't know, would like help and just expect an answer. The spark of this debate was not someone who had a lot of respect for those who were trying to help, nor the people that made the things in the first place, and got little respect in return.

It's also highly relevant, it is a fundamental lack of respect that caused Nao to basically abandon Aeva in the first place, and this lack of respect was from people who didn't read what was put in front of them in big bold red letters and still asked for help because they didn't read the FAQ, the big warning notice shown during install etc. Small wonder that he lashed out at people, and it's rubbed off on me as well.

If you want help, fine, ask, but be respectful of the people who are going to provide it - that's the *real* problem on this forum.

For the newbs out there who've not dealt with this type of personality... a translation:

"If you want help,  fine,  ask,  but be sure to kiss my ass sufficiently enough for me to consider providing it."

At least be honest about it.  I restore coin-op arcade machines... which is what my forum is about... and we have a number of extremely talented techs who know their stuff.  Unfortunately about half of them know they know their stuff and come off with a very similar attitude when someone who DOESN'T asks a question deemed "beneath them".

Just an observation from a newb here.  Nothing more.  I was asked.  I provided the answer.
